Bauchi State Government to Establish Local Government Health Care Authorities in All 20 Local Government Areas

This was disclosed in a statement by the spokesperson of the State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (SPHDA), Suleiman Alhassan Dambam who quoted the SPHDA Executive Secretary, Pharmacist Adamu Ibrahim Gamawa while speaking at a sensitization meeting with the 20 LGAs Caretaker Chairmen held in Jos.  He said that the Local Government Healthcare Authorities will also have full-fledged advisory Committees and Management teams. He informed that the objective of the meeting is to share with State and LGA Caretaker Chairmen the National guidelines and agree on the process according to National guidelines.

Gamawa further stated that, Nigeria had instituted a national policy to bring Primary Healthcare under one roof in order to integrate management and end fragmentation in the healthcare sector. He added that Primary Health Care Board, Management team; Local Government Health Authorities and practitioners have an important role to play in the implementation Primary Health Care Under one roof in the State.

The chairman informed that under the EU-UNICEF project, Bauchi State has developed far-reaching governance initiatives and reforms to address fragmentation and dysfunctionality.

He stated that the integrated system brings primary care services together under one management structure adding that under the new system, Primary health institutions will be streamlined to provide better services for people and improved outcomes.

In his presentation the UNICEF Consultant Olusunde Oluseyi said a lot of works needs to be done to reach everybody with quality health care in the state. He said that the key objective of the programme is to ensure increased in coverage and quality of health services as well as access quality services at all levels.  Oluseyi added that a productive working relationship between the Board and management team is therefore essential for moving primary health care forward.

Under the new arrangement according to National Guideline all Local Government will have Local Government Health Authority with advisory committee to oversee and ensure implementation of Primary Health Care in accordance with established guidelines while the Management team at the Local Government level has the operational role.

Responding on behalf of the 20 Local government caretaker committee Chairmen, the caretaker committee Chairman Bauchi Local Government area ‎, Adamu Abubakar expressed commitment of the Local Government Chairmen to establish the Local Government Health Authorities and inaugurate all committees soonest.

Bauchi State is placed first in Northern East during the last Assessment and third best in the country in terms of implementation processes.
